MOOC on youth work for the prevention of violent extremism and radicalisation

During the course of 2018, ECYC, the partner organization of Federation of Youth Clubs of Armenia, is implementing an annual work plan focusing on the development of youth workers’ skills, with particular attention to the topic of prevention of violent extremism and radicalization of young people. The work plan is composed of three main actions: a Massive Online Open Course (MOOC), a training for trainers in Sibiu, Romania, and projects micro-financing session.

The opening of the MOOC on youth work for the prevention of violent extremism and radicalisation, taking place from the 15th of June until the 31st of July 2018, has been already announced. The online course comprises 8 successive webinars, during which a trainer will explain and train participants on topics related to youth work and prevention of violent extremism and radicalisation. The course will be thought in English and during the course students are required on average to invest 3 hours/week to follow the lessons and complete assignments.

The training team is made up of trainers from Belgium, Romania, Ireland, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Switzerland, who were involved in the ECYC 2017 work plan on youth work and the prevention of violent extremism and radicalization. Certificates of participation will be awarded for those successfully completing all the modules. This course will be a plus for those who want to apply to the ECYC micro-financing session on youth work and prevention of violent extremism, coming up later this August.

Participation in the course is free of charge. Registrations to participate in the MOOC are open at: https://goo.gl/forms/yrgqW6yjYmiimPfJ2

The curricula of the course is based on materials and successful non-formal learning experiences from the 2017 work plan dedicated to youth work and prevention of violent radicalisation, as well as collaborative experiences, materials and non-formal learning activities that we found remarkably effective in our work with other international NGOs (MIJARC) and dedicated European agencies (RAN).

Following this MOOC, participants will be able to:

  • understand and be able to use in regular youth work practice basic notions related to youth work dealing with prevention of violent radicalization of young people: legislation, concepts and definitions, history, European and national level actors, examples of current practices etc;

  • understand the main steps necessary to develop a youth work project addressing these issues, from design to implementation, delivery and evaluation;

  • reflect critically on their own practice and on the implications of the concepts they are learning.
